A Driver’s Medical Exam is required to take into consideration both your interests and the welfare of the community. In some crash reports we are informed that the driver lost control of his vehicle after suffering “a medical episode”. This most often includes having suffered a heart attack, stroke and fainting. Normal levels of blood pressure are particularly important for the efficient function of vital organs such as the heart, brain and kidneys and for overall health and wellbeing. Not only is blood pressure an important consideration for drivers, but also the recommended medication and possible side effects thereof. Driver error is blamed for approximately 85% of fatal road crashes in South Africa. The healthier the driver the better he/she will be equipped to remain focused, alert and able to reduce these driver errors or the threat of suffering “a medical episode”.

Logistics Medical Consist of the following

A Professional Driving Permit (PDP) is needed to drive public transport and heavy duty vehicles for example; taxis, buses and breakdown vehicles

It is valid for 12 months and is signed off by an OHNP

Includes questions regarding any Health conditions currently present or any past medical conditions to evaluate the the risks that might be associated with the employee and the work that will be done

A series of questions that relates to the employees Family and their Health, thus indicating if the employee might be at risk to certain deceases that runs in the family

Measuring the Height of an employee

Weight measurement along with the height help determine the employees BMI which adds to a persons capability of doing certain tasks

Checking any physical abnormalities that might be present which may compromise ones ability to execute certain tasks

Blood pressure is what most call a silent killer. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Over time, if untreated, it can cause health conditions, such as heart disease and stroke, thus it is very important to check as most people do not know when they have High blood pressure

Urinalysis is used to detect and manage a wide range of disorders, such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease and diabetes. A urinalysis involves checking the appearance, concentration and content of urine. Abnormal urinalysis results may point to a disease or illness.

Vision Screening tests the following visual parameters – Visual Acuity, Depth Perception, Colour perception, muscle balance (Horizontal/Vertical) and peripheral vision.

Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe in and out. It also measures how fast you can empty the air out of your lungs. This is one of the most common pulmonary function tests. This test helps diagnose breathing problems such as asthma and COPD.

All persons undertaking a medical must complete the COVID-19 questionnaire which is accompanied with a Temperature measurement To reduce the risk of spread of COVID–19 in the workplace
