CONSTRUCTION MEDICALS

The promulgation of the amended Construction Regulations in 2014¹ introduced the need to issue construction workers with medical certificates of fitness (MCoFs) based on the jobs in which they were employed. Regulation 7(8) of the Construction Regulations states: “A contractor must ensure that all his or her employees have a valid medical certificate of fitness specific to the construction work to be performed and issued by an occupational health practitioner in the form of Annexure 3”. The intention of Annexure 3 is to ensure that a worker is certified as medically fit, based on the understanding of the tasks the he or she is required to perform relevant to the job requirements, the exposures he or she might encounter in the workplace, and the personal protective equipment required

The intention of Annexure 3 is to ensure that a worker is certified as medically fit, based on the understanding of the tasks the he or she is required to perform relevant to the job requirements, the exposures he or she might encounter in the workplace, and the personal protective equipment required. It is valid for 12 months and is signed off by an OHNP

Includes questions regarding any Health conditions currently present or any past medical conditions to evaluate the the risks that might be associated with the employee and the work that will be done

A series of questions that relates to the employees Family and their Health, thus indicating if the employee might be at risk to certain deceases that runs in the family

Measuring the Height of an employee

Weight measurement along with the height help determine the employees BMI which adds to a persons capability of doing certain tasks

Urinalysis is used to detect and manage a wide range of disorders, such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease and diabetes. A urinalysis involves checking the appearance, concentration and content of urine. Abnormal urinalysis results may point to a disease or illness.

On a Snellen chart we determine the line that the person can just recognize. If that line is twice as large as the reference standard (20/20), that means that the test subject sees at 20 feet what a person with normal vision sees at 40 feet. Another way of saying this is that a person with 20/40 vision has vision that is only half as good as normal – or, objects must be at half the normal distance for him to see them
